Seller impersonation fraud is growing — and it works because agents are communicating with sellers they've never met in person. Phone calls, texts, emails. No face. No verification. Just an assumption that the person on the other end owns the property.
Megan Lopez of Fidelity National Financial says the fix is simple. Request a video call. Ask for two forms of identification — a driver's license and a second form of ID. In many cases that single request is enough to make a fraudster vanish.
Realtors are the first point of contact in every transaction. That makes them the first opportunity to stop fraud before it ever reaches the title company or the closing table.
