Most buyers never see it coming. Fraudsters infiltrate unsecured Gmail and Yahoo accounts used by real estate agents and quietly monitor the entire transaction — the buyer, the seller, the title company, the timeline.
Then right before closing, when everyone is stressed and distracted, they strike. They send fake wiring instructions that look identical to the real ones — same logos, same contact information, same format.
If the buyer doesn't call a known trusted phone number to verify before wiring — the funds go to the fraudster. And they're usually not coming back.
One rule prevents it every time. Call and verify. No exceptions.
